Regi ousted from OFSAA girls basketball; La Salle, Rideau still alive

Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers advanced to the quarter-final round before being eliminated Friday afternoon from the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls AAA basketball tournament in Windsor.
After a 56-32 win over Toronto Henry Carr Friday morning, the No. 4-seeded Panthers were beaten 49-43 by No. 5 Sarnia Northern. It was the second year in a row that Regi was eliminated in the quarter-finals of the provincial championship tournament.
After falling behind in the first quarter, the Panthers scored 16 points in the second to tie the game 26-26 at halftime. Sarnia held a 16-10 edge in the third quarter that Northern was able to sustain to the end of its third straight victory at the 16-team championship.
Bridget Mulholland and Rebecca Wendland scored 11 points apiece for Regi, the Kingston Area champion, which had been undefeated through 10 regular-season games, three playoff contests and two games at OFSAA before finally being beaten.
Against Carr, the Panthers led 26-11 at halftime and got 15 points from Mulholland, who ended the tournament with 42 points.

La Salle Black Knights stayed alive at the AA girls tournament in Kingsville with a 35-31 win over Stephen Leacock of Agincourt. That will send the Knights into a quarter-final game tonight at 7:30 against fourth-seeded Guelph Centennial.
Centennial took a 14-point lead in the first quarter of its game Friday with Stratford St. Michael and went on to a 50-35 victory.
Jamie Mumby scored 15 points for 11th-seeded La Salle, which rebounded from a 49-17 defeat to No. 2 Timmins Theriault in its tournament opener Thursday.

At the single-A championship in Ingleside, the Rideau District Lions raced to a 21-2 lead in the first quarter and they went on to defeat Kincardine 60-19. Their second straight win at the 16-team tournament sends the Lions into a quarter-final match with second-seeded North Bay Algonquin tonight at 7 p.m.
Algonquin, also 2-0 going into that game, scored 19 points in the second quarter of a 43-26 win Friday over Englehart.
Taylor Bresee, with 17 points, Leah Rice, with 12, and Abby Okum, with eight points, led Rideau, which enjoyed a 50-8 lead at halftime. Related Articles:
