KC to host personalized screenings of running film

Posted: December 4th, 2014 @ 11:51pm

Transcend, a film that portrays running in the context of Kenyan politics, will be screened in the auditorium at Kingston Collegiate Tuesday, Dec. 9.

There will be two showings; one for students at 9:55 a.m. and another for community members at 7 p.m. Admission will be by donation, with proceeds going to support work in Tanzania that has been undertaken by KC’s Youth in Action group.

Members of the Blues cross-country team were able to convince filmmaker Michael Del Monte to attend the screenings, and to answer questions about the movie, which tells the story of Kenyan long-distance runner Wesley Korir, who used his running to escape the poverty of his homeland.

After winning the Boston Marathon in 2012, Korir returned to Kenya to run for a seat in the Kenyan parliament. The film examines his attempt to balance the rigors of campaigning with the demands of marathon training, and also how a runner’s faith can impact in his training and racing.

Del Monte, 28, is from Toronto. He has a Masters in theology from the University of Toronto—and a personal best of 3:46 in the 1,500 metres.
