Queen’s Golden Gaels overcame the better part of an early three-goal deficit but they ultimately succumbed for the fifth game in a row Saturday night, as they dropped a 6-4 decision to the Brock Badgers in an Ontario University Athletics hockey game in St. Catharines.

Brock, 9-8-2, had lost its previous two games since the Christmas break, but the Badgers emerged from the first period, one in which the teams each took 17 shots at the opponent’s goal, with a 3-0 lead.

By the time five minutes had expired in the second period, however, the Gaels had cut the deficit to one goal, but they could never pull even. Brock led 4-2 at the end of the period, and 5-2 after Sammy Banga scored his second goal of the game for Brock in the eighth minute of the third.

Two goals by Darcy Greenaway brought Queen’s within a goal once again, with a little more than eight minutes remaining, but Brock’s Andrew Radjenovic scored the final goal of the game with just 29 seconds remaining.

Queen’s outshot Brock 13-7 in the third period, 40-38 overall.

Greenaway had three goals—giving him a team-leading 11 in his rookie season—and an assist. Kelly Jackson scored the other goal for the Gaels, his third in the last four games.

Kingston’s Kaine Geldart had two assists for Brock, while his brother, Anthony, had one.

Queen’s, 8-10-1, remains tied for sixth place in the East division with Ontario Tech, 5-2 loser Saturday at York.

The Gaels’ next game is Friday night, when they will host the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks at the Memorial Centre.

Guelph Gryphons pumped seven goals past the Royal Military College Paladins in the first period Saturday night and they went on to post an 11-1 win at Guelph.

Guelph led 4-0 by the time the game was nine minutes old and two goals 42 seconds apart later in the period turned the game into a rout. Marcus Quinlin scored his second goal of the year on a power play with less than eight minutes remaining in the third period to spoil the shutout bid of Gryphons goaltender Andrew D’Agostini, the former Peterborough Pete.

Guelph outshot RMC 50-24.

Leonard Fabbri had two goals among his five points for the Gryphons, who won for just the fifth time in 19 games this year.

RMC, still winless 18 games into their season, will resume play Thursday when they travel to Sudbury to play Laurentian.
