A goal by fourth-year defender Mary Coughlan proved to be the winner Saturday afternoon as the Queen’s Golden Gaels defeated the Lions in an Ontario University Athletics women’s hockey game in Toronto.
It was the fourth win in the last five games for the Gaels, the No. 4-ranked team in Canada, and it leaves them in second place at 12-2-3, three points behind the league-leading Western Mustangs and one point ahead of third-place Windsor.
Western suffered its first regulation-time defeat of the season Saturday, 4-0 at Windsor.
After spotting York an early 1-0 lead, the Gaels got goals from Danielle Girard and Shawna Griffin to lead 2-1 at the end of the first period. Coughlan’s goal early in the second gave Queen’s a two-goal cushion that withstood a goal by York’s Kristin Barbara.
It was Coughlan’s fourth goal of the year—and her second against York.
The teams played a scoreless third period.
The Gaels, who outshot the home team 30-25, will play their next game Friday night, when they will face sixth-ranked Guelph. The Gryphons will bring an 11-2-3 record to the Memorial Centre, a record that includes a 1-0 win over the Gaels in Guelph Nov. 8.
