Queen’s Golden Gaels scored just nine points in the second quarter—while surrendering 26—as they fell 74-45 to the McMaster Marauders Saturday afternoon in an Ontario University Athletics women’s basketball game in Hamilton.

The teams were tied 12-12 at the end of the first quarter but the Gaels couldn’t find their shooting eye and defensively they were unable to contain the fourth-highest scoring team in the province. McMaster led 38-21 at halftime.

Gemma Bullard had a season-best performance for Queen’s, coming off the bench to score 11 points. No one else scored more than seven points for the Gaels, who shot a woeful 26 per cent (19-for-74) from the field, and were just 3-for-18 from beyond the three-point arc.

Robyn Pearson had 12 rebounds for Queen’s, but the Gaels otherwise took a beating under the glass, as they were outrebounded 53-29.

The loss, Queen’s third in the last four games, dropped the Gaels to 9-6, well behind East division-leading Ryerson, 13-3, and four points ahead of third-place Toronto, 7-7.

For No. 9-ranked McMaster, 12-4, it was the sixth win in a row. Danielle Boiago had 26 points and 10 rebounds for the Marauders, who got 12 points and 12 rebounds from Gananoque’s Clare Kenney.

The Gaels return to action Friday, then they will host the Carleton Ravens, 7-8, at 6 p.m. at the Athletics and Recreation Centre.
