Three familiar names were among the dozen incoming freshmen introduced by Queen’s Golden Gaels football coach Pat Sheahan at the team’s annual fundraising gala in Toronto Saturday night.
Jeremy Pendergast, who Sheahan described as “the outstanding athlete in the local recruiting class,” will follow in the footsteps of his father, Tim, quarterback of the 1992 national championship team, and his brother, Matt, who will begin his third season with the Gaels this fall.
Pendergast, a receiver, played his high school ball with the Holy Cross Crusaders and junior football with the Kingston Grenadiers.
Another legacy coming to the Gaels is wide receiver-defensive back Connor McQuilkin, via Corpus Christi high school in Burlington. His older brother, Luke, was a linebacker with the Gaels.
The third name that will be known to the Gaels is that of Chris Osei-Kusi. A wide receiver from Cardinal Ambrozic in Brampton, Osei-Kusi is the kid brother of Western’s all-star defensive end Ricky Osei-Kusi, and his coming to Queen’s is considered something of a recruiting coup.
He played on the gold medal-winning Ontario team at last summer’s under-18 Canada Cup tournament in Saskatchewan, where Gaels offensive co-ordinator Ryan Sheahan was a member of the coaching staff.
He’s one of three members of that team who were introduced last night. The others are Marco Aref, a wide receiver from Bishop Thomas in Ancaster; Kyle Gouveia, a quarterback from St. Roch in Brampton, and Marquis Richards, a fullback from Villanova College in King City.
Also introduced Saturday night were:
• Enrique Custodio, a linebacker from Chaminade College in Toronto who also played for the Toronto Wildcats in the Ontario Varsity Football League;
• Louis-Christophe Hebert, a wide receiver-defensive back from Quebec City via Upper Canada College;
• Paul Henning, a defensive back from Resurrection high school in Waterloo;
• Ryan Keays, a receiver from Bedford, N.S.—the same hometown as Gaels Vanier Cup receiver Blaise Morrison—via St. Andrew’s College in Aurora.
• Ron Jones, a linebacker from St. Michael high school in Niagara Falls;
• Phil Stratton, a linebacker from Lakeshore Catholic in Port Colborne;
McQuilkin and Henning were both members of the provincial team in 2013.
More than 400 players, parents, former players and supporters attended Saturday’s $150-per-plate gala. TSN analyst Jock Climie was the master of ceremony, and Montreal Alouettes coach Tom Higgins was the keynote speaker.
