Sydenham poised to advance at OFSAA girls volleyball

Posted: March 9th, 2015 @ 11:47pm

Sydenham Golden Eagles have assured themselves a spot in the quarter-final round at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls AA volleyball tournament in Dryden.

The Eagles won both of their matches on the first day of the three-day tournament, 2-0 over Dryden (25-22, 25-17) and 2-0 over Timmins (25-21, 25-22). Tuesday, Sydenham will conclude its preliminary round-robin against North Bay Widdifield, which also emerged from the first day of competition 2-0.

Regardless of the outcome of that match, both Sydenham and Widdifield will advance into the playoff round.

In the AAA tournament at Ingersoll, the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers, the Kingston Area champions, weren’t as fortunate. They dropped a heart-breaker in their first match, 2-0 to Governor Simcoe of St. Catharines (26-24, 25-23). In its second match, Regi bowed 2-0 to London Central (25-14, 25-12) and was eliminated from championship contention.

Central and Simcoe both were undefeated Monday. On Tuesday, Regi will close its round-robin against Father Redmond of Toronto, which was also winless on the first day of the tournament.
