UNB wins national university hockey title

New Brunswick Varsity Reds won their second Canadian Interuniversity Sport hockey championship in three years Sunday night, when they defeated the Saint Mary's Huskies 2-0 in the final game of the six-team national tournament in Saskatoon.
Former Kingston Frontenacs defenceman Ben Shutron is a member of the varsity Reds, the Atlantic conference champion that was undefeated at the tournament. In preliminary play, New Brunswick defeated Saskatchewan 3-1 and Trois-Rivieres 8-3.
Two other former Kingston juniors, goaltender Andrew Peters and defenceman Justin Wallingford, were with Saint Mary's, though Wallingford left Sunday night's game with an injury in the first period and did not return.
Neither Shutron, an academic all-Canadian, nor Wallingford, the Huskies' captain who was completing his fifth year with the team, collected a point in the tournament. Peters played all three games for Saint Mary's, allowing just five goals.
The Huskies, edged 4-3 in overtime by Alberta before they defeated Waterloo 5-1 Saturday night, were coached by Trevor Stienburg, from Moscow, north of Kingston. On Wednesday night Stienburg was named national university coach of the year.
The Reds' victory came 50 years to the day after the first University Cup tournament, co-hoted by Queen's University and Royal Military College, concluded in Kingston. Canada's first national university hockey title was won by the McMaster Marlins, coached by Les Prince. Prince went on to be the school's athletics director, and the football field at McMaster is named in his honour.
