Regi scores late to post season-opening soccer win over La Salle

Posted: April 21st, 2015 @ 1:23am

Five teams failed to find the back of the opponent’s net Monday as the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior boys soccer season got underway, but scoring goals wasn’t an issue at Machin Field, where the La Salle Black Knights were facing the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers.

On an afternoon when windy weather contributed to some ragged play, a late goal by Joseph Gabros gave the Panthers a 5-4 victory.

Ryan Almeida, with two, Sam Meyers and Damon Matos scored the other goals for Regi, while Shawn Miller scored twice and Daniel Billingsley and Will Shorthouse once each for La Salle, which scored the first goal of a game that went back and forth throughout.

Other teams, however, found goals difficult to come by, even though all the games were played on artificial turf. The extreme case was at Miklas-McCarney Field, where none of the Eagles, neither the Golden ones from Sydenham, nor the regular ones from Ernestown, were able to score in a 0-0 draw.

Elsewhere, the Loyalist Lancers were blanked 3-0 by the Kingston Blues; the Marie-Rivier Dragons were downed 7-0 by the Holy Cross Crusaders and the Granite Ridge Gryphons were defeated 7-0 by the Frontenac Falcons.

In the only other game that didn’t involve a shutout, the Bayridge Blazers and Napanee Golden Hawks battled to a 3-3 tie.

Isaac MacFayden opened scoring for KC late in the first half of a game at Tindall Field, ripping a free kick from 20 yards out past Loyalist keeper Jeremy McBride. Goals by Mark Lappan and Ben Posthumus early in the second half secured the victory.

In Monday’s only senior girls game, Holy Cross defeated Granite Ridge 7-0. Playing at Caraco Field, the Crusaders got two goals apiece from Kirsten LeBell and Alison Dodwell, and one each from Adrianna den Ouden, Jensen Murphy and Ashley MacDonald.
