Brett Babcock will be recognized Friday at the second annual Limestone Legacy Invitational high school track and field meet at Caraco Field.

The event, organized by Kingston Area coaches and other volunteers, serves as both a preseason meet and to establish a bursary for past high school track athletes. Babcock is the first recipient of the award.

A champion hurdler in his high school days at Regiopolis Notre Dame and Kingston Collegiate, Babcock was also a national champion trampolinist who had represented Canada internationally when he was paralyzed in a training accident in his second month of study at the University of Alberta in October, 2012.

Now living independently, and having resumed his post-secondary studies at Carleton University, Babcock hopes to qualify for the Para Pan American Games this summer in Toronto, as a wheelchair sprinter and thrower.

Friday’s event is the first of the eastern Ontario preseason meets, to be followed by the the 39th Hungerford-Kinsmen Invitational in Brockville on Saturday, May 1, and the 16th annual Michelle Foley Bay of Quinte Invitational in Belleville, Friday, May 8.

The Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association championships will be contested Wednesday and Thursday, May 13 and 14, at Richardson Stadium (for the throwing events Wednesday) and Caraco Field.
