Vanier runners win senior divisions of Bayridge Road Race

Posted: May 1st, 2015 @ 7:32pm

Runners from Vanier won two of the six divisions Friday at the 37th annual Bayridge Road Race for elementary school competitors, in the neighbourhood surrounding Bayridge Secondary School.

Anna Workman won the midget girls race in 10 minutes, 55 seconds, just four seconds ahead of Lily Chubaty of Loughborough. Workman’s Vanier teammate, Miles Brackenbury, had a 17-second margin of victory over Matt Wilson of Calvin Park in midget boys division, winning in 10 minutes, 18.9 seconds.

It was a day of close races, as the margin of victory in three of the six divisions was a second or less.

The closest race of the day was the bantam boys contest, where the top three racers were within six seconds of each other. Bronis MacDougall of Remi Gaulin edged Jude Wheeler-Dee of Rideau by just one second, crossing the line after 2.0 kilometres in 7 minutes, 23 seconds. Carson Fraser of Lancaster Drive was third, in 7:29.

The closest finish of the meet came in atom girls division, where Jessica Lui of Winston Churchill finished in 8 minutes 35.7 seconds, just three-tenths of a second ahead of Madelyn Campbell of Amherstview.

In atom boys division, Noah Booth of R.G. Sinclair, at 7:44, was just a second faster than Cameron Smith of Rideau.

The other race winner was Abby Howland of Storrington, who enjoyed a 13-second margin of victory over Claire Sedgewick of Welborne in bantam girls division.

On a sunny spring day, more than 700 runners took part.
