Sydenham Golden Eagles perpetrated perhaps the biggest upset staged by any team in any sport in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association this year, as they ousted the Holy Cross Crusaders from senior girls soccer playoffs Wednesday, with a 2-1 win at Holy Cross.

The Eagles ended the year in seventh place, with a 2-4 record, zero wins against any team that was ahead of them in the standings and zero wins against teams that ultimately finished above .500.

Holy Cross, meanwhile, finished second in the final standings, with five convincing wins in six games. The only loss came in the final game of the regular year, 2-1 to the undefeated Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers.

The unexpected result sends Sydenham into a semifinal match Tuesday against the aforementioned regular-season champion Panthers, who were 6-1 winners Wednesday in their quarter-final contest with Ernestown.

Tuesday’s other semifinal will see the Frontenac Falcons, 1-0 winners Wednesday over the Loyalist Lancers, face the Kingston Blues, who advanced with a 3-0 win over the La Salle Black Knights.

Playing on Brother O’Gara Field, Regi got two goals apiece from Emma Lefebvre and Cassie Almeida and one each from Bridget Mulholland and Cristina Tavares. Dana Fallis scored the lone goal for the visiting Eagles.
