Napanee teams win, lose at junior elimination tournament

Posted: July 4th, 2015 @ 2:11pm

Eric Morgan struck out 12 and allowed just two singles Saturday morning as Napanee Shoeless Joe’s defeated Chatsworth 4-0 at the Ontario Amateur Softball Association junior elimination tournament in Owen Sound.

It was the first game of the tournament for Napanee, which will now play the host team at 2 p.m.

Owen Sound opened with a 5-4 win over Alvinston Friday night.

Cole Bolton and Brett Irwin had two hits apiece in an eight-hit Napanee attack. Irwin drove in a pair of runs, and No. 9 hitter Michael Jordan scored twice and delivered a solo home run for the winners, for whom five of the eight hits were for extra bases.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning, when Napanee scored twice on Jordan’s home run and an RBI double by Taylor Brown. Two runs in the top of the seventh provided some insurance.

The other Napanee team in the 10-team tournament, the Express, took the New Hamburg Cubs to the bottom of the seventh inning before bowing 10-9 Saturday morning. The Express, 10-0 winner over Saugeen Friday night, led the Cubs, one of the pre-tournament favourites, 9-8 going into the final half inning.

“We played a helluva game,” coach Al Fenwick said. “We just came up short.”

The Express will face elimination when it plays at 4 o’clock against the winner of a noon game between Innerkip and Oshawa.
