Victoria Travascio of Argentina won the gold medal in women’s 49er FX sailing competition Saturday at the XVII Pan American Games in Toronto.

It was largely a formality, as Travascio came last in the medal race on Lake Ontario, off Royal Canadian Yacht Club. She won seven of the first 15 races in the series, and only finished as low as fourth once.

Travascio finished with 36 points in the Olympic low-scoring system, seven better than Brazil’s Martine Soffiati Grael, who won six races in the week-long competition.

Kingston’s Danielle Boyd, in a boat skippered by Erin Rafuse of Halifax, did not sail in Saturday’s race. They came last in the six-boat fleet, with a best finish of third in racing Thursday.

As the Games sailing competition draws to a close Sunday, Terry McLaughlin will be trying to secure a medal in open J-24 racing. He stands second to Argentina’s Matias Pereira going into the medal race with a narrow lead over Chile’s Matias Seguel, who goes into Sunday’s race in third place.

McLaughlin's son, Evert, like his father also a Queen’s University grad, is fifth in the 10-boat open Snipe fleet going into the medal race.

Also Sunday, the Canadian men’s volleyball team, with former Queen’s Golden Gael Adam Simac in the lineup, will play its second preliminary round game at 3:35 against Puerto Rico. The Canadians are 1-0 after opening the tournament with a 3-0 win over Mexico Friday.
