Terry McLaughlin was fourth in the J-24 medal race Sunday to claim the silver medal on the final day of the sailing regatta at the XVII Pan American Games in Toronto.

Sailing on Lake Ontario off Royal Canadian Yacht Club, McLaughlin, a graduate of Queen’s University and silver medalist in Flying Dutchman class at the 1984 Olympics, ended the 13-race competition with 39 points, 12 points behind gold medalist Matias Pereira of Argentina.

Pereira, who won half of the 12 races in the preliminary series, was third in Sunday’s final race, which was won by Brazil’s John Spear King. It was the only win of the regatta for Spear King, who finished fifth overall.

Matias Seguel of Chile, who closed to within striking distance of McLaughlin with four consecutive top-two finishes on Thursday and Friday, was fifth Sunday to maintain his position for the bronze medal.

McLaughlin’s medal was the ninth for Kingston-connected athletes in the first week of the Games. Brittany Benn of Napanee and former Queen’s varsity player Nadia Popov won gold with the women’s rugby team; Matt Mullins, another former Gael, won gold with the men’s rugby team, and rowers won five medals on the water in St. Catharines: Will Crothers was a double gold medalist, in the men’s four and eight; Rob Gibson won gold in the men’s quadruple sculls and silver in the men’s single, and Nic Pratt was part of Canada’s gold medal-winning lightweight men’s four.

As the sailing competition drew to a close Sunday, Evert McLaughlin, Terry’s son and also a Queen’s University grad, matched his best performance by finishing third in the medal race. McLaughlin, who finished third in each of the first two races of the series, finished fifth overall.

Raul Rios de Choudens of Puerto Rico won his seventh race, of the 13 sailed, to claim the gold medal. He finished with 20 points, 18 more than silver medalist Luis Soubie of Argentina.

Elsewhere Sunday:

Former Queen’s Golden Gael Adam Simac played in the first two sets, helping Canada to a 3-1 win over Puerto Rico in men’s volleyball play. It was Canada’s second win, without defeat, in the tournament. It was the first loss for Puerto Rico, a 3-1 winner over the U.S. in its opening game Friday.

Simac had four kills as Canada posted consecutive 25-23 wins to open the match. After Puerto Rico won the third set 25-21, the Canadians closed out the win with a 25-20 triumph in the fourth.

Canada will end its preliminary schedule Tuesday when it plays the U.S.

Monday, Kate Gillis will lead the Canadian women’s field hockey team against Uruguay in a quarter-final game at the St. George field on the University of Toronto campus. Canada advanced through the preliminary round unbeaten in three games, while Uruguay emerged from its pool 1-2.

• On Saturday, Canada Basketball announced that Aaron Doornekamp would be part of the men's team that will begin play Tuesday against the Dominican Republic. Doornekamp, the Ernestown Secondary School gread who was a national university champion with Carleton, has been playing professionally in Europe since then, most recently in Germany. He'd been participating in a 16-man tryout camp in Toronto, from where the final 12-man Canadian roster was selected.
