Holy Cross splits pair of games at OFSAA girls hockey
Posted: March 19th, 2013 @ 9:55pm
Holy Cross Crusaders split their two games on the opening day of the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations girls AAA/AAAA hockey tournament Tuesday in Orillia.
The Crusaders opened with a 2-0 win over St. Mary of Cobourg, before they were beaten 5-2 by St. Aloysius Gonzaga of Mississauga.
Wednesday, Holy Cross, the tournament's fourth-seeded team, will conclude preliminary play against St. Maximilian Kolbe of Aurora at 9:30 a.m. Kolbe lost each of its two Tuesday games without scoring a goal, 6-0 to Gonzaga and 2-0 to St. Mary.
Against Gonzaga, the Crusaders fell behind 2-0 in the first period but they got a goal from Grace Pereira in the second minute of the second period to cut the deficit in half. Holy Cross trailed 3-1 going into the final frame but Gonzaga put the game away when Lori Murphy and Melissa Channell scored goals 15 seconds apart in the middle part of the period.
It was the second goal of the game for Channell, who also had an assist. She also scored twice in her team's opening victory.
Kailey Peirson completed scoring for Holy Cross.
In their opening game, the Crusaders got two goals from Shelby Perry, 2:30 apart in the first period, and withstood a St. Mary rally that produced a solitary third-period goal. Hayden Major assisted on both Holy Cross goals.
The top two teams from the division at the end of preliminary play Wednesday morning will advance into the quarter-finals tomorrow afternoon. Related Articles:
