Canada advanced to the semifinals of the women’s field hockey tournament with a 2-0 quarter-final win over Uruguay Monday at the XXVII Pan American Games in Toronto.
Kate Gillis, the Regiopolis Notre Dame grad, stared at midfield for the Canadian team, which will face the U.S. in a championship semifinal Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Canada will go into the game 3-1, with a loss to Argentina in the preliminary round as the only blemish on its record. The U.S. is 4-0 after defeating the Dominican Republic 15-0 in its quarter-final Monday.
Wednesday’s other semifinal will pit undefeated Argentina against Chile.
Tuesday, Leonora Mackinnon of Kingston’s Cutting Edge Fencing club begins competition in women’s epee fencing, and Tuesday night the Canadian men’s volleyball team, with former Queen’s Golden Gael Adam Simac in the lineup, will try to improve to 3-0 when it plays the U.S. at 7:05.
