Canada will play for the bronze medal Friday after suffering a 3-0 loss to the U.S. in the semifinals of the women’s field hockey tournament Wednesday at the XVII Pan American Games in Toronto.

The U.S. scored once in the first quarter and twice in the fourth to secure a berth in the championship game against Argentina, also Friday.

It was the second time that Canada, with midfielder Kate Gillis of Kingston in the lineup, was shut out in five games at this tournament. The Canadians will face Chile in Friday afternoon’s bronze medal match at 5 o’clock.

Both teams are 3-2 going into that game; Canada having lost 5-0 to Argentina in the preliminary round, while Chile was blanked 2-0 in the preliminary round by the U.S. and 5-0 by Argentina in Wednesday’s other semifinal.

Elsewhere Wednesday, Canada staged a dramatic fourth-quarter rally to defeat Argentina 88-83 in men’s basketball play. Odessa’s Aaron Doornekamp had four points, one rebound an an assist in 17 minutes of playing time for Canada, which clinched a berth in Friday’s semifinals with the victory.

In winning their second straight game, the Canadians trailed 50-44 at halftime and 66-59 going into the fourth quarter. They scored 29 points in the final period to improve to 2-0 going into their final preliminary round game Thursday, against Mexico at 6 p.m.
