Canada improved to 3-0 Thursday as it concluded the preliminary round of the men’s basketball tournament at the XVII Pan American Games with a 96-76 win over Mexico.
Ernestown Secondary School grad Aaron Doornekamp scored five points in 18 minutes of playing time for the Canadians, who led 49-39 at halftime. Mexico fell to 1-2, losing for the second straight game after opening with a two-point victory over Argentina.
Friday at 6 p.m., Canada will play a championship semifinal game, against a U.S. team that was beaten 93-83 Thursday night by Brazil. The Americans finished the preliminary round 2-1. Brazil, 3-0, will play the Dominican Republic in Friday’s other semifinal.
Also Friday, Kingston’s Kate Gillis will lead the Canadian women’s field hockey team into the bronze medal game against Chile, and Adam Simac, the former Queen’s varsity volleyball player, will be in the lineup as undefeated Canada plays a semifinal match with Argentina.
