Kingston athletes win three medals at national Legion track meet

Cole Horsman of the Kingston Track and Field Club won two medals Sunday at the Royal Canadian Legion national youth track and field championships in Ste-Therese, Que.
Horsman, a member of Team Ontario, was one of two medalists from the Kingston club. Hailey Wolfgram won a bronze medal in girls under-18 shot put.
Entering the meet with a personal-best time of 22.77 seconds in the 200 metres, Horsman won his heat in boys under-16 division in 22.78 seconds and in the final he trimmed 16 one-hundredths of a second off his PB, claiming the silver medal in 22.61 seconds.
The race was won by Emmanuelle Ajiroba of Brampton in 22.32 seconds.
Ajiroba, competing in Quebec for the Brantford Flying Angels club, is no stranger to Horsman. He’s the same person who edged Horsman by four one-thousandths of a second to win the midget boys 100 metres at June’s Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations championship in Toronto.
Horsman added a gold medal in the medley relay—legs of 400, 200, 200 and 800 metres—putting Ontario into a lead it would never surrender when he ran the first 200-metre segment.
He was not so successful in his other two events, however. Horsman was disqualified for a false start in the 100 metres and the Ontario 400-metre relay team of which he was a member was disqualified for an exchange zone violation.
Wolfgram, fifth in the same event at the national Legion meet a year ago, was sitting fourth when she entered the circle for her final put Saturday. It went 13.66 metres, 27 centimetres beyond her previous best that day, and 16 centimetres farther than the best attempt of Brantford’s Holly Taylor, who ultimately finished fourth.
Rebecca Herman of Collingwood, a member of Team Ontario, won the event at 14.85 metres. Her father, Ron Herman, was an offensive lineman with the Queen’s Golden Gaels football team in the late 1980s, and he also competed in shot put during the intercollegiate track season.
His coach at Queen’s, Melody Torcolacci, now coaches Wolfgram with the Kingston club.
Among other local athletes who competed as members of the Kingston club:
• Mike Rowsell was seventh in boys under-16 high jump, clearing 1.75 metres
• Amanda Black was eighth in girls under-18 heptathlon, with 3,661 points
• Emily Fawcett was 11th in girls under-18 discus with a best attempt of 29.59 metres, and a throw of 39.77 metres placed her 12th in hammer

• Nicole Zohorsky was 16th in girls under-18 100-metre hurdles at 15.34 seconds
