Frontenacs 50th

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Wednesday, March 20, 1963
Kingston moves five points ahead of Hull-Ottawa in the battle for first place with a 6-4 win at St. Paul, Minn. In 12 interlocking games with teams from the International Hockey League, the Frontenacs have won 11 and tied one.
Cliff Pennington paced Kingston with two goals and two assists. It was the 23rd consecutive game Pennington has collected at least one point, tying the record set two years ago by former Frontenac Orval Tessier.
Ron Willy also scored twice for Kingston, Billy Knibbs scored his 20th and Don Blackburn his 41st for the Frontenacs. Millers goaltender Jacques Marcotte made 62 saves, after having made 70 saves when the teams played in Kingston. Bruce Gamble had an easy night tending the Frontenacs' goal, facing just 18 shots.
In Sudbury, meanwhile, Gerry Cheevers turned in an exceptional performance as the Wolves defeated Hull-Ottawa 4-1. With just five games remaining in the regular season, the defeat crippled the chance of a third consecutive pennant for the Canadiens, who Friday night will face St. Louis and Sunday afternoon host Kingston.
Cheevers was spectacular in turning aside 32 shots. It was only with 20 seconds remaining in the game that he lost his shutout. At the other end of the rink, Cesare Maniago had one of his poorer nights, being beaten for four goals on just 20 shots. Marc Dufour scored his 45th and 46th goals for Sudbury while Chick Balon and Bob Woytowich scored the others. Bob Ellett ruined Cheevers' shutout bid when he batted in a rebound at 19:40 of the third period.
Canadiens called up three players from the Montreal juniors with only two seeing action, Germain Gagnon and Bob Lemieux. The Ottawa Citizen reported the Canadiens are trying to get two juniors from their Regina farm club by Monday to help fill out their thin bench.
