The return to a single tier of senior girls basketball in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association failed to produce any close games on opening day Tuesday.

At La Salle, the Black Knights defeated the Kingston Blues 42-15, while the every member of the visiting Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers scored as they pinned a 40-8 loss on the Napanee Golden Hawks.

After a year of dividing the senior girls league into A and B divisions, based on where teams saw themselves in the competitive hierarchy—with a double round robin within each division as a regular season—KASSAA had no motion to entertain to continue the experiment at its annual general meeting in the spring.

This season, therefore, the 10 teams will play as they did before 2014, in a single division, with each team playing the others once for a nine-game regular schedule.

Play resumes Wednesday afternoon when Loyalist hosts Bayridge at 3 p.m. and Frontenac visits Ernestown at 5 o’clock. The other teams in the league, Holy Cross and Sydenham, will begin play next week.

In senior boys volleyball play Tuesday, the Kingston Blues opened with a 3-0 victory over the La Salle Black Knights, and the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers posted a 3-0 win over the Napanee Golden Hawks.

Jacob Eby had 10 kills and two blocks as KC prevailed 25-23, 25-21, 25-20. Jack Cockfield added seven kills to the Blues' attack.

Playing at Regi, Liam Huntley had six kills for the home team, while Paul Bates opened the third set with 16 straight service points to send the Panthers on their way to the straight sets victory.
