A pair of first-half goals by Sydney Stewart sent the Bayridge Blazers on their way to a 6-0 victory over the La Salle Black Knights Wednesday in Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association field hockey play at La Salle.
Emily Steele, Chloe Smith, Katelyn Mackey and Riley Wales scored the other goals for Bayridge, which led the game 3-0 at halftime. Chelsea Herman posted her second shutout of the young season.
The Blazers were one of five teams to improve to 2-0 in games Wednesday. The Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers did so with a 4-0 home-field win over the Ernestown Eagles; the Sydenham Golden Eagles remain undefeated after beating the Loyalist Lancers 3-1; the Holy Cross Crusaders blanked the Golden Hawks 2-0 in Napanee, and the Kingston Blues are the others who retain a share of first place, thanks to their 2-0 win over the Frontenac Falcons.
At Regi’s Brother O’Gara Field, strong defence and some fine goaltending kept visiting Ernestown in the game early, but eventually Jen Cowan opened scoring with a goal that was followed shortly thereafter by one from Alexis Pereira that sent the Panthers into the break with a 2-0 lead.
Lilly Dickson and goaltender-turned-midfielder Lize Freundorfer scored the other Regi goals, as Charlee Robinson posted the shutout.
Sydenham got all three of its goals from Kat Newton—her third, fourth and fifth in just two games this year.
Kiko Kelway scored both KC goals, making the shutout goalkeeping of Cam Champagne-Hartley good for the Blues’ second straight win.
