Weekend bleak for Queen's soccer teams

Posted: October 5th, 2015 @ 10:07pm

Not a lot of teams have had difficulty with the Carleton Ravens this year, but the Queen’s Golden Gaels are one of them.

Sunday afternoon at Miklas-McCarney Field, the Gaels surrendered a last-minute goal that gave the visiting Ravens a 1-1 draw in an Ontario University Athletics women’s soccer game.

The Ravens, a game below .500 and seventh in the East division, nonetheless now have one of their three wins and a tie with Queen’s, a team which, having gained just a pair of draws from two weekend home games, has won just once in its last four games.

Friday night, the Gaels earned a 0-0 draw with the Ottawa Gee-Gees, the second-ranked team in Canada.

Queen’s, 4-2-5, shares fourth place in the East division with Laurentian. Both teams have 17 points, though the Voyageurs have played one less game.

The goals were like bookends in Sunday’s game with Carleton, as Tianna Lombardo scored for Queen’s in the first minute of play, with a strike from the top of the 18-yard box.

A key save by Gaels keeper Madison Tyrell on a close shot in the game’s 75th minute preserved the narrow lead, but the Gaels missed an opportunity to go two goals ahead when a cross from Rachel Radu found Jenny Wolever six yards out. The rookie's strike, however, went over the net.

That proved to be an important play in the game when, in the 91st minute, rookie Carleton midfielder Sarah Zutrauen got past the Gaels defence and dribbled around Tyrell to score the game-tying goal, the first of her intercollegiate career.

Carleton, 3-4-3, has 14 goals in 10 games this year, four of them in two games against Queen’s.

“It was a disappointing result,” Gaels coach Dave McDowell said. “(The Ravens) fought hard in the second half so you have to give them credit.

“Some of our players were terrific, so it’s tough to lose two points like that, but we go back to the drawing board for next week.”

Against the undefeated Gee-Gees on Friday night, the Gaels acquitted themselves well. As much as Carleton seems to bedevil them, Queen’s is at its best against the Gee-Gees, who have just three ties in 10 games to blemish a perfect record, two of them coming in games with Queen’s.

The Gaels dominated the first half of the scoreless contest and the Gee-Gees the second, though Queen’s had the best scoring opportunity of the game in its 70th minute, when the Gaels put the ball into the Ottawa goal on a play that was called back for being offside.

Tyrell made five saves in the Queen’s goal, while the Gaels got just three shots on the Gee-Gees’ Cynthia Leblanc, who posted her fourth shutout in nine games this year.

Leblanc shared her fifth clean sheet on Sunday, when the Gee-Gees defeated the Royal Military College Paladins 6-0. Playing at home, Ottawa broke open a 1-0 game with five second-half goals. The Gee-Gees took 26 shots on RMC keeper Alexandra Hogg.

RMC, 1-8, dropped a 4-0 decision to Carleton at home on Saturday. With just three goals this year, the Paladins have been shut out seven times.

RMC resumes play Wednesday at Carleton, before travelling across town to face Queen’s in the Gaels’ next game on Friday.

A seven-game unbeaten streak came to an end for the Queen’s men in Sudbury on Sunday with a 3-2 loss to the Laurentian Voyageurs.

Laurentian took a 2-0 lead into halftime but goals three minutes apart, by Kristian Zanette and Oliver Coren in the first 20 minutes of the second half, drew the Gaels even. Though Queen’s had much of the initiative after that, Laurentian scored the game’s only other goal, converting a corner kick in added time.

For Laurentian, it was just the third win in 10 games this year. It was, however, the second win in a row for the Voyageurs, who defeated RMC 1-0 Saturday, in a game where they outshot the visitors 10-4.

The Gaels remain tied for third place in the East division standings with Carleton, both at 5-2-3.

Saturday in North Bay, the Gaels got a goal in the 69th minute from Andrew Martin to gain a 1-1 tie with the Nipissing Lakers. After a scoreless first half, Nipissing, on a four-game undefeated streak of its own, had opened scoring with Brandon TeBrake’s fourth goal of the year in the 53rd minute.

Nipissing and RMC played to a scoreless draw on Sunday, with Tobin Semple making six saves to post the shutout for the Paladins, his second clean sheet of the season. Though just 1-8-1, RMC has allowed only three goals in its last four games.

Queen’s and RMC will play their next game against each other Friday, 7:15 p.m., at Miklas-McCarney Field. The Gaels posted a narrow 2-1 victory when the teams last met, Sept. 12.
