Queen's men, women get best of RMC

Posted: October 10th, 2015 @ 9:03pm

Two first-half goals by Rachel Radu sparked the Queen’s Golden Gaels to a 6-0 victory over the Royal Military College Paladins Friday night in an Ontario University Athletics women’s soccer game at Miklas-McCarney Field.

The Queen’s attack exploded for four second-half goals, three of them by Jessie de Boer, who now has six goals this season. Rookie Jenny Wolever had the other goal for the Gaels, who scored three times in the game’s final six minutes.

Paladins keeper Alexandra Hogg faced 13 shots, while Michaila Frawley in the Queen’s goal was required to make just one save to post her second shutout of the season.

After going winless in their first four games, the Gaels improved to 5-2-5, tied for third place in the East division with Laurentian, which has played one less game. RMC fell to 1-10.

The Gaels resume play Friday when they travel to Oshawa to play Ontario Tech. RMC will play next Saturday at Trent.

Queen’s men, meanwhile, rebounded from a winless weekend in northern Ontario a week ago with a 2-0 victory Friday over RMC.

It took the Gaels less than four minutes to get on the scoresheet as Chris Wellsman scored his first goal of the season. William Twardek came off the bench to score Queen’s second goal early in the second half. Kingston Collegiate grad Taylor Reynolds was tested just once as he posted the shutout, his second of the year.

Winner of six of its last eight games, Queen’s, 6-2-3, sits fourth in the East division, one point behind third-place Carleton and four ahead of Nipissing. RMC, though 1-9-2, has given up just six goals in its last six games.

The Gaels will host Carleton Wednesday at 7 p.m., while the Paladins resume play Saturday at Trent.
