Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers emphatically staked their claim to a share of first place in high school field hockey play Tuesday, pinning a 5-1 defeat on the previously undefeated Kingston Blues in a game played at Tindall Field.
The win leaves Regi, unbeaten in seven Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association games, tied with the Holy Cross Crusaders atop the standings. The Crusaders kept pace Tuesday with a 5-0 home field win over the Bayridge Blazers.
Those results set the stage for a showdown for top spot next Monday, when the Panthers and Crusaders meet in a 3 p.m. game at Caraco Field.
Christina Tavares scored three goals and Lilly Dickson scored twice for Regi, most of them on breakaways. A tidy defensive performance, meanwhile, kept the Blues largely at bay, until Mary Frost scored KC’s only goal on a short corner with about 10 seconds left in the game.
It was the first goal the Panthers have surrendered this year.
Elsewhere Tuesday, the La Salle Black Knights gained their second win of the season, 4-2 over the Frontenac Falcons; Hayley Lambert scored two goals to lead the visiting Napanee Golden Hawks to a 3-1 win over the Loyalist Lancers, and the Sydenham Golden Eagles ended a four-game winless streak by blanking the Ernestown Eagles 1-0 at Caraco Field.
Playing at La Salle, Alicia Anglin, Maddie Veldman, Emily Santin and Hailey McLaren shared the scoring for the Knights, as they won for the second time in their last three games. Jenna Churchill-Anderson and Sophia Munoz scored for Frontenac.
Ashley Couvreur scored the other goal for Napanee, as the Hawks climbed one game over .500 with their third-straight win. At 4-3, they claimed sole possession of fourth place.
Play resumes with five games Wednesday, including a match between Holy Cross and KC at 3 o’clock at Caraco Field.
