One drought ended Wednesday afternoon for the Bayridge Blazers but another continues to bedevil the Sydenham Golden Eagles.
The Blazers ended a four-game winless streak with a 1-0 win over the winless Ernestown Eagles in a Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association field hockey game in Odessa, while at Caraco Field, the Sydenham Golden Eagles, despite gaining a point from a scoreless tie with the Napanee Golden Hawks, continue to have difficulty scoring goals.
The Golden Eagles have scored just twice in their last six games span, having been shut out four times, with a 1-0 victory and a 1-1 tie thrown in. Sydenham remains in the middle of the pack, however, at .500, even though they haven’t scored more than one goal in a game since Sept. 23, in a 3-0 win over Loyalist.
At Ernestown, Chloe Smith scored the Bayridge goal and the shutout goalkeeping of Chelsea Herman made it stand up for the win as the Blazers, 3-0 to start the season, climbed back above .500 at 4-3-1.
Elsewhere Wednesday, the top teams remained undefeated, as the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers defeated the La Salle Black Knights 3-1, and the Holy Cross Crusaders handed the Kingston Blues a 1-0 setback. It was the second loss in two days for the Blues, who began the week 6-0.
For the first time this year, Regi found itself trailing in a game. After giving up their first goal of the season in the final 10 seconds of their victory Tuesday over KC, the Panthers surrendered a goal in the first few minutes of their game at Brother O’Gara Field to La Salle’s Ali Santin.
Regi replied on a goal off a short corner by Mairead Corrigan, and another by Alexis Pereira. Jen Cowan completed scoring in the final minute of the game.
The regular schedule concludes Monday with five games, including two key matches: at Caraco Field at 3 p.m., where Regi and Holy Cross will play for first place, and at 3:45 at Bayridge, where the Blazers and Napanee, both 4-3-1, will meet to determine who will finish fourth, and get home field for a quarter-final match.
