Queen’s Golden Gaels moved into fourth place in the Ontario University Athletics East division standings Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 over the Trent Excalibur in a women’s soccer game in Peterborough.
The win gives Queen’s four points from the weekend, moving them two points ahead of the Toronto Blues, going into the final week of the regular schedule. Coming after a scoreless draw Friday night at Ontario Tech, the victory extended the Gaels’ unbeaten streak to six games.
Sunday’s game began with an early flurry, as the teams traded three goals in an eight-minute span, with Jesse de Boer of Queen’s igniting the rally in the game’s 11th minute. Kaitlin Logan promptly tied the game for Trent, but the Gaels quickly regained the lead on a goal by Tianna Lombardo.
That’s how the game stayed until Micah Vermeer scored for Queen’s in the game’s final minute.
On Friday night, Queen’s goalkeeper Madison Tyrell and her Tech counterpart Helen Frampton each made three saves as both teams kept the other largely at bay. It was Frampton’s league-leading ninth shutout of the year—her second against Queen’s—and the fourth of the season for Tyrell.
Queen’s, 6-2-6 and just two points behind Ontario Tech and Laurentian, who share second place, can still finish as high as second. With a top-four finish comes a home date in the playoffs, and the Gaels can clinch one when they host Nipissing, 5-6-3, and Laurentian, 8-4-2, to close their schedule Saturday and Sunday, respectively, in games that will both start at noon at Miklas-McCarney Field.
Royal Military College Paladins, meanwhile, gained a point in a scoreless draw with Trent Saturday, before getting clobbered by Ontario Tech 8-0 on Sunday. RMC goalkeeper Alexandra Hogg made seven saves for the shutout on Saturday, but she faced 16 shots Sunday in Oshawa, as the Paladins fell to 1-11-1.
