There was plenty of drama Wednesday in the high school field hockey quarter-finals, and, strangely enough, some of it involved the regular-seaosn champion Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers.

The Panthers, who allowed just two goals in winning all of their games during the regular year, needed overtime to dispose of the Frontenac Falcons, the lowest seeded team in the post-season tournament.

Winner of just two games all year, Frontenac nonetheless led the Panthers until a late-game goal off a short corner by Lilly Dickson forced overtime. A goal in the extra period by Christina Tavares, who tipped a pass from Jen Cowan into the Falcons’ goal, gave Regi a 2-1 victory.

Despite the disparity in records, it perhaps shouldn’t have been surprising that Frontenac played the Panthers tough. When the teams met during the season, Regi managed to score just once in a 1-0 victory.

Meanwhile, at Napanee, the Golden Hawks got a goal in sudden-death overtime from Ashley Couvreur to claim a 1-0 victory over the Bayridge Blazers. For the Hawks, who began the year 1-3, the victory extended an undefeated streak to six games.

In Wednesday’s other quarter-finals, the other top seeds also won, as the Holy Cross Crusaders defeated the La Salle Black Knights 6-1 and the Kingston Blues got a goal from Maddie Henry and shutout goaltending from Cam Champagne-Hartley in a 1-0 win over the Sydenham Golden Eagles.

Semifinals will be played Monday at Caraco Field, where KC will play Holy Cross at 2:30 p.m. and Regi will meet Napanee at 4 o’clock.
