Perhaps it shouldn’t be surprising that the only home team to win a senior boys high school volleyball match Thursday is the one that plays in what is proving to be one of the most inhospitable gyms in the county.

The Granite Ridge Gryphons once again made the trip back to town a little bit longer, this time with a 3-2 win over the Loyalist Lancers.

Robert Crawford had 19 kills and Riley Teal 44 assists to lead the Gryphons’ attack.

Granite Ridge moved into a fourth-place tie with Loyalist at 5-3, and the Gryphons have achieved that with a 4-1 record at home, their only loss in Sharbot Lake coming against the Kingston Blues.

It was the second loss in a row for the Lancers, who won five of their first matches this year, and have another victory pending next week when they pocket a default from the recently folded Frontenac Falcons.

In other Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association matches Thursday, the visitors all won, as KC improved to 8-1 with a straight-sets win over the Golden Hawks in Napanee; the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers overcame a sluggish start to remain undefeated after a 3-0 victory at La Salle; Sydenham improved to 6-2 with a victory by forfeit over Frontenac, and the Holy Cross Crusaders took a 3-0 win out of Bayridge.

At La Salle, Dan Niles registered 12 service points and Ogi Marceta had seven kills in the Panthers’ eighth straight win.

Play resumes Monday with one match. Holy Cross and the Marie-Rivier Dragons, currently tied for sixth place at 4-3, will meet at Marie-Rivier.
