Holy Cross, Regi to host senior girls semifinals

Posted: November 10th, 2015 @ 10:43pm

The top senior girls basketball teams in the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association can now get down to business.

There were no upsets—and none of the games was even that close—as Tuesday’s quarter-finals left the top four teams from the regular season as the first round post-season survivors.

As a result, in Thursday’s semifinals the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers will host the Sydenham Golden Eagles at 2 p.m., while the La Salle Black Knights will visit the Holy Cross Crusaders at 3:45.

Regi had the most difficult time of it Tuesday, as the Panthers defeated the eighth-seeded Loyalist Lancers 60-33. Elsewhere, the home teams all more than doubled the score of their respective opponents, as Holy Cross whipped the Kingston Blues 67-11, La Salle dumped the Bayridge Blazers 46-13 and Sydenham defeated the Frontenac Falcons 41-18.

Emma Lefebvre’s ball handling and Logan Rook’s 22 points led Regi. Hailey Wolfgram added 17 points to the winners’ attack, one that featured some solid outside shooting.

Jordan Harry, with 10 points, and Grace Van Hal, with seven, led Loyalist.

At La Salle, the Knights took a 29-6 lead into halftime. Abbey Hetherington and Jamie Mumby scored 10 points apiece for La Salle, while Alyssa Platt and Nicole Zohorsky each scored four points for Bayridge.

The games involving the four semifinalists during the regular year were both close. Regi had its narrowest margin of victory of the season against Sydenham, 37-34 in an early October game played at Sydenham, while Holy Cross gained a 30-24 victory a week later at La Salle. For the Crusaders, who lost just once this year, it was the only other time an opponent got within 17 points.
