Crusaders stymie Sydenham; continue late-season surge

Posted: November 10th, 2015 @ 11:10pm

Holy Cross Crusaders continued their late-season surge Tuesday afternoon, upsetting the Sydenham Golden Eagles 3-0 in a high school senior boys volleyball quarter-final at Sydenham.

The Eagles finished the regular year in fourth place, with an 8-3 record that included an early season 3-1 victory over Holy Cross that ultimately gave them home court for Tuesday's match.

The Crusaders, whose record fell to 3-4 with a mid-October loss at Marie-Rivier, went on to close the season with four consecutive victories, three of them straight-sets wins.

For their trouble, the Crusaders get a semifinal date Thursday afternoon with the undefeated defending provincial AAA champion Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers, who won their quarter-final Tuesday 3-0 over the Granite Ridge Gryphons.

It was the 12th consecutive match Regi has won this year without allowing an opponent to win a set.

Elsewhere in the quarter-finals, the second-place Kingston Blues blanked the Marie-Rivier Dragons 3-0, and the Loyalist Lancers, who finished third, defeated the La Salle Black Knights 3-1.

KC and Loyalist will meet in Thursday’s other semifinal, at 3:45 p.m. at KC.
