Queen’s Golden Gaels will play for fifth place Saturday at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport women’s soccer championship tournament in Vancouver.

For the second time in as many days, the Gaels and their opponent, in this case the Calgary Dinos, were deadlocked after regulation time and 30 minutes of scoreless overtime led them to a shootout.

On this night, Queen’s would prevail 4-2, to claim a 1-0 victory.

All four shooters scored for the Gaels: Laura Callender, Kyra Steer, Jessie de Boer and Tara Bartram. Queen’s goalkeeper Madison Tyrell ran the Dinos out of opportunities when she stopped a shot by Jordan Smith on Calgary’s fourth attempt.

In Thursday’s quarter-final game, the Gaels were beaten 4-3 in a shootout by Sherbrooke. Friday’s match was the third in Queen’s last four games that had to be decided by penalty kicks.

In Saturday’s consolation final, Queen’s will face the Atlantic champion Capers from Cape Breton, 2-0 winners Friday over the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks in the other consolation semifinal.

Gaels coach Dave McDowell spoke of the resilience of his players Friday after their rain-soaked loss to Sherbrooke.

“We bounced back nicely today,” McDowell said in a CIS release. “I mean, it was easy to be disappointed after (Thursday) night and the miserable conditions, so I thought we came out and played quite well today. Calgary is a fantastic team.

“It would have been nice to create some goals from the run of play, but penalties are what they are.”

The Ontario champion Gaels outshot Calgary 8-5.

Also Saturday, Trinity Western will face top-seeded Laval, and Sherbrooke will play the host team from the University of British Columbia in the championship semifinals. Gold- and bronze-medal matches will be played Sunday.
