Top teams all win in senior girls volleyball play

Posted: January 7th, 2016 @ 11:47pm

Kingston Blues rode the strong serving and setting of Maddie Love to a 3-0 home-court victory Thursday over the Frontenac Falcons in a Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls volleyball match.

Gabby Anagnostopoulos led the KC attack with 12 kills as the Blues won 25-14, 25-23, 25-21.

The win was the sixth in seven matches for KC, which remained in third place atop the closely bunched standings. Both teams ahead of the Blues also won Thursday, the Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers prevailing over the Marie-Rivier Dragons 3-1 and the Sydenham Golden Eagles beating the Napanee Golden Hawks 3-0.

Sydenham, which has lost just one set all year—and none since a 3-1 victory over Holy Cross Dec. 8—continues to lead the league at 7-0. Regi stands second at 6-0.

Playing at home Thursday, the Panthers didn’t have it easy against the upstart Dragons. Regi took the first set 25-10 but managed just a 25-22 win in the second before dropping the third to Marie-Rivier, 25-18.

Marie-Rivier fell to 3-4 when it dropped the fourth set of the match, 25-13.

Regi’s Hailey Wolfgram and Emma McLean combined for 14 kills.

In other matches Thursday, the La Salle Black Knights gained their first win of the year, 3-2 over the Ernestown Eagles; the Loyalist Lancers climbed back to .500, snapping a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win over winless Mille-Iles, and the Holy Cross Crusaders strengthened their grip on fourth place, winning for the fifth time in six matches, 3-0 over the Granite Ridge Gryphons.
