Queen's women dominate boards, defeat Blues in Toronto

Posted: January 16th, 2016 @ 12:41pm

Queen’s Golden Gaels were dominant rebounders to a degree seldom seen Friday night, as they defeated the Toronto Blues 57-33 in an Ontario University Athletics women’s basketball game in Toronto.

Robyn Pearson led the way with 20 rebounds, as the Gaels held a 61-32 advantage over the Blues, including 39-13 under the Queen's glass. More than half of the Gaels' points, 34, came off 19 Toronto turnovers or second chances generated by 22 offensive rebounds.

Abby Dixon scored 13 points and had six assists and five steals—all game highs—to lead Queen’s to its seventh win in eight conference games. Pearson scored 11 points while teammate Jenny Wright also had a double-double, with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Alanna Garner scored 12 points for Toronto, which fell to 3-5. The Blues managed to score just 12 field goals in the game, and they scored just four points in the fourth quarter.

Saturday night, the Gaels, the 10th-ranked team in Canada, will visit the Ryerson Rams, 6-1 and the No. 2 ranked team in the country. The Rams warmed up for the game by establishing a school for points in a game Friday night, in a 99-61 win over York.
