St. Lawrence Vikings clearly are no longer in awe of the Algonquin Thunder.

Last year, the Vikings ended Algonquin’s four-year-old winning streak in a game at St. Lawrence. Saturday afternoon, the Vikings pinned another blemish on the Thunder’s distinguished record, handing the division-leading team a 74-67 Ontario Colleges Athletic Association women’s basketball defeat.

It was just the third win in eight games for St. Lawrence, and only the second loss in nine outings for Algonquin.

St. Lawrence led for much of the first half, but the Vikings had to rally to tie the game 34-34 by halftime. The home team led by as many as six points in a third quarter that ended with St. Lawrence ahead 57-53. Leading by five points, a three-point basket midway through the fourth quarter by Haley Gourdier gave the Vikings a 66-58 lead, a margin they sustained to the end of the game.

Tyler Simon had with a season-high 19 points, nine rebounds and six assists to lead St. Lawrence. Shian Noble, also a rookie, finished with a team-high 12 rebounds.

The Vikings resume play Saturday, Jan. 23, in Barrie against the Georgian Grizzlies.
