Queen’s Golden Gaels snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night in Sudbury, where they defeated the Laurentian Voyageurs 3-2 in an Ontario University Athletics hockey game.

Darcy Greenaway’s sixth goal of the year, with seven and a half minutes remaining in the third period, broke a 2-2 tie and gave Queen’s its 12th victory of the season, against seven losses. With two games in hand, the win leaves the Gaels two points behind Ontario Tech, which Friday night defeated Nipissing 5-3 in North Bay, in the battle for fourth place in the East division, and home-ice advantage in the first round of playoffs that goes with it.

Twice the Gaels fell behind Laurentian by a goal and on each occasion they came back to tie the game.

The Voyageurs got the only goal of the first period, when defenceman Tyler Shaw scored his first goal of the season in just the second minute of the game.

A power-play goal by Ryan Bloom five and a half minutes into the second period tied the game for Queen’s, but Daniel Pachis restored Laurentian’s lead at 14:12, also on a power play.

This time, it took just 49 seconds for the Gaels to reply, as Patrick McGillis scored his 10th goal of the year, tying him with the team lead with Eric Ming. Ming drew an assist on the goal, thus extending his consecutive-game point streak to 10 games.

Queen’s outshot Laurentian 40-27, including 18-7 in the third period. The Voyageurs fell to 7-11-4, and they remain eighth in the nine-team East division.

The Gaels continue their tour of northern Ontario Saturday night, when they will play the Nipissing Lakers. The seventh-place Lakers, 8-10-3, have lost their last four games, and seven of their last eight since Nov. 20.
