Registration opens Monday for youth football league

Posted: January 31st, 2016 @ 5:47pm

Registration for players returning to play in the Thousand Islands Minor Football League begins online Monday.

Registration fee per player is $250, and players may be enrolled at www.timfl.com.

New players may register beginning Feb. 8.

The developmental tackle football league provides opportunities for players in three age groups: atom (boys and girls born in 2006 or 2007, generally in Grades 3 and 4), peewee (2004 and 2005 birth dates, Grades 5 and 6) and bantam (2002 and 2003 birth dates, usually those in Grades 7 and 8).

There are teams based in Odessa, Gananoque and Sydenham, as well as all regions of the City of Kingston.

“Our goal is to introduce kids to the aspect of team play, fair play and sportsmanship,” Joe Pacheco, long-time league coach and spokesperson, said, in a release. “Our volunteer coaches are focused on teaching kids how to play safely—with an emphasis on fun!”

Young people play football because it is a rewarding team sport that features positions for young people with a variety of skills and physical abilities, Pacheco continued. “There is an opportunity for virtually everyone to excel. In addition to improving fitness levels, football is also a tactical sport. The game teaches cooperation and teamwork. Being part of a football team fosters respect for others and helps develop strong social skills.”

All equipment is provided by the league, with the exception of mouth guards and footwear. Practices take place two nights a week, once the snow is off the fields. Games will be held between the first of May and end of June, mostly on weekends.
