A shootout goal by Greg Cerilli gave the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks a 4-3 win over the Queen’s Golden Gaels in an Ontario University Athletics hockey game Sunday afternoon in Waterloo.

Cerilli, who has six goals this year, was Laurier’s third shooter. In the shootout, neither Eric Ming nor Laurier’s Christian Mroczkowski was able to score, then in the second round Hawks goaltender Vinny Merante stopped Gaels defenceman Spencer Abraham and Derek Schoenmakers beat Queen’s goalie Jacob Brennan to give Laurier the advantage.

Steve Trojanovic then scored for the Gaels, but Cerilli’s goal ended the shootout 2-1 in Laurier’s favour.

The loss gave Queen’s a point, however, and lifted the Gaels into a fourth-place tie with idle Ontario Tech in their quest for home-ice advantage in the first round of playoffs. Both Queen’s, 16-7-2, and Tech have 34 points, though the Gaels have a game in hand.

They’ll make up that game Wednesday night against last-place Royal Military College at the Constantine Arena.

Much as the Gaels pulled their Saturday game with Waterloo out of the fire, when Ryan Bloom’s goal with 20 seconds left sent the game into overtime—where Queen’s ultimately won—on Sunday defenceman Mac Clutsam’s goal with 1:37 left in the third period lifted Laurier into a 3-3 tie and extend the game.

It was Clutsam’s fourth goal of the season, but his third in the last five games.

Queen’s scored the only goal of the first period and the Gaels led 2-1 after the second. A goal by Darcy Greenaway in the first minute of the third period gave Queen’s a two-goal lead, but Matt Dupont scored for Laurier four minutes after that to draw the home team within a goal of the lead.

Laurier outshot Queen’s 18-13 in the third period and, as the Gaels started the first overtime period a man short, the Hawks pumped nine shots at Brennan in the 4-on-4 extra frame, but the game remained tied. Queen’s outshot Laurier 4-2 in the scoreless second overtime, played with three skaters a side.

Bloom and Alex Stothart scored the other goals for Queen’s. It was Stothart’s second goal in his last three games.

For Laurier, the win, the fifth in the Hawks’ last seven games, evened their record at 13-13. The Hawks are 2-0 in games that have gone into overtime this year.

Queen’s, playing its third game in four days, goes into the final week of the regular year 16-7-2. The Gaels, who were playing their third overtime game since the middle of January, are 2-2 in extra time this year.

All of Queen's defeats this year have been by a single goal, or by two goals in games where the opponent scored into an empty net.

After Wednesday's game, the Gaels will conclude their regular schedule Friday and Saturday at the Invista Centre, where they will play Nipissing and Laurention.
