Regi, Sydenham to host volleyball semifinals

Posted: February 18th, 2016 @ 3:30am

Regular-season champion Regiopolis Notre Dame Panthers and runner-up Sydenham Golden Eagles will host the Kingston Area Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior girls volleyball semifinals Thursday.

Each team posted a straight-sets victory in quarter-final play Wednesday, the Panthers defeating the Marie-Rivier Dragons and Sydenham posting a home-court win over the Bayridge Blazers.

In the other quarter-finals, the Holy Cross Crusaders got the best of the upstart Loyalist Lancers 3-1 and the Kingston Blues defeated the Frontenac Falcons 3-0.

Regi played what coach Pat Farrell described as “some uninspired volleyball at times,” but the Panthers did enough to eliminate eighth-place Marie-Rivier.

Leftside Hailey Wolfgram delivered 12 kills while setters Annie Kennedy and Natasha Blanchet combined for 22 assists as Regi won 25-19, 25-17, 25-19.

At KC, the Blues trailed the first set 23-18 but Emily Bruce served seven straight points to spark the comeback. With Maddi Henry leading KC in attacks, the Blues won the next two sets to complete the sweep.

Sydenham will host Holy Cross at 3:45 Thursday in one semifinal, while Regi will entertain KC at 5:15. The winners will advance to the KASSAA final Sunday, 6:30 p.m., in the main gym at the Queen’s University Athletics and recreation centre.
