Sayre Powers scored 16 points Tuesday afternoon as the Kingston Blues defeated the Frontenac Falcons 50-47 in the championship game of the Eastern Ontario Secondary Schools Athletic Association senior AA basketball tournament in Brockville.

KC was unbeaten in four games of the six-team tournament, and in beating the Falcons avenged a home-court defeat in the Kingston Area semifinals.

Powers was also a force in the Blues’ 56-48 win over Smiths Falls in the semifinals Tuesday morning, dominating the play at both ends of the court.

“He was definitely the MVP of EOSSAA,” Frontenac coach Suche James wrote, in an email. “He had a great tournament.”

In winning the gold medal game, KC overcame a 29-23 halftime deficit.

The Blues led Smiths Falls 31-27 at halftime of their semifinal game. Bertug Yoruk scored 18 points for KC, the proceeds of six three-point baskets.

In its semifinal, the host team from Thousand Islands Secondary School couldn’t cope with a spirited Frontenac defence as the Falcons won their third-straight game at the tournament, 65-37. Kyle Casford scored 21 points for the winners, hitting seven shots from beyond the three-point arc, five of them in the first half, which ended with the Falcons leading 43-21.

Both Frontenac and KC will advance to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations AA championship tournament, starting Monday in Timmins.
