Barrie draws first blood in playoff series with Frontenacs

Kingston Frontenacs scored just 69 seconds into the game but they were stymied the rest of the way Thursday night as the Barrie Colts opened their first-round Ontario Hockey League playoff series with a 3-1 win.
The Colts will take a 1-0 lead into the second game of the best-of-seven Eastern Conference quarterfinal Saturday night in Barrie.
Ryan Kujawinski, who scored 17 goals during the regular year but only four since Jan. 20, opened the scoring for Kingston and the Frontenacs, who finished seventh, 32 points behind second-place Barrie, led 1-0 going into the second period.
Steven Beyers, who had two of his 16 regular-season goals in four games against Kingston, tied the game in the first minute of the second period. Three minutes later he assisted on a power-play goal by Mark Schiefele.
The score stayed that way until Anthony Camara scored into an empty net with 46 seconds left in the game.
The Frontenacs, owners of the least feared power play in the league, were true to form on special teams, failing on all seven man-advantage situations. Barrie, owner of the finest power play in the league, was 1-for-4.
Goaltender Mike Morrison made 41 saves in the Kingston goal, 17 of them in the third period when Kingston was outshot 18-6. The Frontenacs tested Barrie's Mathias Niederberger 34 times, with half of them coming in the opening 20 minutes.
It was a rough night for Frontenacs defenceman Warren Steele, who took two minor penalties in the third period and was on the ice for both of Barrie's even-strength goals.
The series returns to Kingston for games Monday and Wednesday.
* Mississauga Steelheads, the other team with which the Frontenacs were scratching for a playoff spot the final two weeks of the regular schedule that made it, opened their series with the Belleville Bulls ignominiously by getting pounded 8-1.
