Frontenacs 50th

Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Friday, March 22, 1963
Hull-Ottawa Canadiens and Sudbury Wolves combine to score six goals in the second period, four of them in a wild 83-second span, and the visiting Wolves emerge with a 6-4 victory at the Auditorium in Ottawa.
The Canadiens, seeking a third straight regular-season EPHL championship, missed a glorious opportunity to gain ground on the league-leading Kingston Frontenacs, who were beaten in St. Louis Thursday night. Trailing Kingston by five points, Hull-Ottawa has six games remaining to play, including two with Kingston, the first of which is Sunday afternoon.
Even though he allowed four goals, Wolves goaltender Gerry Cheevers was brilliant, Doug Milton wrote in the Ottawa Citizen, especially in the first two periods. Canadiens took a 2-0 lead in the opening 20 minutes and the second period ended with the teams tied 4-4. The Wolves scored the only two goals of the third. Mike McMahon, Leon Ronson, Dave Richardson, Chick Balon, Marc Dufour and Gord Labossiere scored for Sudbury while Claude Larose, Bob Courcy, Norm Beaudin and Brian Smith scored for Hull.
The Canadiens, losers of four games in a row, have been struggling with four of their best men in the National Hockey League with Montreal. Tonight they dressed 13 players, including Jean Granger, a junior from St-Jerome, but, the Whig-Standard reported, Kingston manager-coach Wren Blair "has managed to stifle any tears" over the Canadiens' plight.
"I know they're down to 10 players," Blair told the newspaper, "but if they finish second, I can't buy the argument that they would've beaten us if they had a full roster."
The Frontenacs, riding a bus back from St. Louis for a Saturday game at home against Sudbury, got news today that Wayne Connelly is being recalled to Boston for the final game of the Bruins' NHL season in Chicago Sunday, replacing the injured John Bucyk.
