Today in Kingston junior hockey playoff history

Posted: March 22nd, 2013 @ 11:04am

Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.

Wednesday, March 22, 1978

Kingston defenceman Behn Wilson delivers two reeling blows to the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds in the first game of a first-round playoff series at the Memorial Centre. He scored the winning goal in overtime as the Canadians gained a 4-3 victory but perhaps more significantly he earlier delivered a shoulder check to a Sault rookie who had his head down as he crossed the Kingston blue line in the third period.

The blow knocked first-year scoring sensation Wayne Gretzky out of the game.

Wilson, Mike Gillis and Gary McMonagle each collected three points in the game, with McMonagle scoring twice for the Canadians and Gillis once. Paul Mancini, Dave Watson and Brent Jarrett scored for the Greyhounds, who entered the playoffs with just one loss in their previous 11 games.

Ten players who played tonight - Tony McKegney, Wilson, Gillis, Tim Kerr, Jay Wells and 16-year-old Paul Coffey of Kingston and Gretzky, Greg Millen, Craig Hartsburg and Ted Nolan of Sault Ste. Marie - went on to distinguished National Hockey League careers.
