Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Saturday, March 23, 1963
Kingston Frontenacs increase their lead atop the Eastern Professional Hockey League standings over Hull-Ottawa to seven points with a 6-0 win over the Sudbury Wolves at the Community Centre.
With the win, the Frontenacs tied two league records with a week remaining in the regular schedule - most wins in a season (41) and most points in a season (91) - both set in 1960-61 by the Hull-Ottawa Canadians. Kingston has a chance to claim both those records for themselves, and lock up first place, with a game tomorrow in Hull.
The Frontenacs had been on the road for more than 24 hours, travelling back from a game Thursday night in St. Louis, and they didn't arrive at home until 9:30 this morning. Instead of a poor game, however, the Fronts come up with one of their finest efforts of the season. "I don't know how they did it, but the guys were sure flying," general manager-coach Wren Blair told the Whig-Standard's Ron Brown.
Bruce Gamble made 33 saves to record the shutout. Dick Cherry scored two goals for Kingston while Billy Knibbs, Pete Panagabko, Harry Sinden and Wayne Connelly shared the others.
