Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Fifty years ago today, Sunday, March 24, 1963
After a series of what Ottawa Citizen sports writer Bob Loucks described as "erratic performances," the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens get back on track, whipping the Kingston Frontenacs 8-2 before about 2,000 fans at the Hull Arena.
The Canadiens scored four times in the first 11 minutes of the game, with goals by Doug Senior and Claude Larose 27 seconds apart making the score 4-0. "The Frontenacs played a listless game, not at all like their performance the night before against Sudbury," Loucks wrote of a 6-0 victory Kingston manager-coach Wren Blair described as "the finest game we have played in the Kingston rink in a long time."
Sunday's game was the first time all season the Frontenacs had more than six goals scored against them.
The decisive win may well be just the shot in the arm Habs need to catch the league leaders in the final week of the schedule, Loucks suggested, though Hull-Ottawa still trails the league-leaders by five points. The Canadiens will get a chance to close the gap Tuesday and Wednesday when they travel to St. Louis to meet the last-place Braves.
Kingston native Senior scored three goals for Hull-Ottawa, while Bob Courcy, playing on a tender ankle, had two goals and assisted on two others by Larose. Bob Ellett had the other Canadiens goal, while Randy Miller and Dick Cherry scored for Kingston, both in the last half of the third period, by which time Hull had built a 7-0 lead.
