Today's installment in a daily series that recalls the story of the 1962-63 Kingston Frontenacs, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their Eastern Professional Hockey League championship season:
Tuesday, March 26, 1963
St. Louis Braves spot their visitors two goals and then roar back with seven straight of their own for a resounding 7-2 win over the Hull-Ottawa Canadiens in St. Louis. It's a crushing defeat for the Canadiens, who squandered a chance to close the five-point gap between themselves and idle Kingston in a race for first place that has less than a week to run.
Hull-Ottawa and the last-place Braves will play again tomorrow night and another loss would end the Canadiens' chances of overtaking the Frontenacs.
With a goal and two assists, Murray Hall shot into a tie for the league scoring lead with 93 points. Alain (Boom Boom) Caron, who joined St. Louis 18 games into the season, had a goal, his 54th, and an assist. Phil Esposito and Duke Harris had two goals apiece for the Braves, while Dennis Kassian scored the others. John Rodger and Keith McCreary scored for Hull-Ottawa within a minute of each other in the first period.
Roger Crozier was outstanding in goal for the Braves, making 36 saves. Cesare Maniago faced 39 shots in the Hull-Ottawa goal.
* Jeannot Gilbert and Wayne Connelly fly into Sudbury to join the Frontenacs for their meeting with the Wolves tomorrow night. In five NHL games Gilbert failed to score a point. Lynn Patrick, Bruins general manager, told Doug McConnell of the Whig-Standard the young centreman was "awfully nervous." Connelly joined the Bruins for their final regular-season game in Chicago, replacing the injured John Bucyk.
