Swimmer, fencer cop top club awards at Queen's

Synchronized swimmer Alex Cross and fencer Francois Beaucage-Gauvreau were named the top varsity club athletes at Queen's University on the first night of the school's 77th annual Colour Awards Tuesday at the Ambassador Hotel.
Cross, from Ottawa, won the Marion Ross trophy as the top female athlete on a varsity club while Beaucage-Gauvreau, from Montreal, received the Jack Jarvis trophy as the top varsity club male athlete.
Varsity clubs are the second tier of intercollegiate teams at Queen's. Athletic awards for varsity teams will be presented Wednesday.
A two-time Canadian University Synchronized Swimming League all-star, Cross, a fourth-year psychology student, is a two-time Queen's academic all-star. Beaucage-Gavreau, a fourth-year mechanical engineering student, is a three-time Ontario University Athletics champion and he twice received the George Tully Trophy for skill, style and sportsmanship from the OUA.
Winners of the Alfie Pierce awards as top club rookies are Julie-Anne Staehli, a track and field athlete from Lucknow, Ont., and Mo Hamour, a squash player from Courtice, Ont. Staehli was fifth over 1,500 metres at the Canadian Interuniversity Sport championships, while Hamour was conference rookie of the year and an OUA all-star.
