Today's installment in a daily feature that looks back at this date in Kingston junior hockey playoff history.
Monday, March 27, 1978
Greg Millen makes two crucial saves late in the third period and Dave Watson scores with less than three minutes to play to give the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds a 6-5 win over the Kingston Canadians and a 3-2 victory in the best-of-five first-round series, sending 3,687 fans home from the Memorial Centre disappointed.
"Greg's the backbone of the club, there's no question," Sault coach Paul Theriault said. "When he first came to the club he told me to let him have some fun. He knows the game, inside-out. He's got a lot of poise and that tends to rub off. This club had a defeatist attitude when I took over. They accepted defeat too easily. I think now they've turned a corner. They don't like to lose anymore."
Kingston trailed 5-2 after Paul Mancini scored his third goal of the game and sixth of the series in the sixth minute of the third period but the Canadians stormed back. Gary McMonagle, a teammate of Millen's for three years in Peterborough and earlier this season with Kalamazoo of the International league, scored less than two minutes later and Jay Wells and Paul Pooley scored goals less than two minutes apart as Kingston tied the game with six minutes to play.
Watson, standing at the right tip of the Kingston goal crease, steered a pass from the left side by Wayne Gretzky into the open side of the net behind Canadians goalkeeper Terry Thompson.
Kingston's Mike Gillis, with four points in the game, finished his junior career with 15 points in the five games of the series.
