Frontenacs ousted after 8-2 defeat
Posted: March 27th, 2013 @ 10:12pm
Kingston Frontenacs bowed ingloriously from Ontario Hockey League playoffs Wednesday night, absorbing an 8-2 beating from the Barrie Colts before 2,905 fans at the Rogers K-Rock Centre.
Barrie swept the best-of-seven first-round series 4-0. It's now been 15 years since a Kingston team last survived past the first round of the playoffs.
Wednesday's game was in doubt for about 10 seconds, the amount of time it took for Barrie to score the first goal. It was 2-0 before the game was five minutes old, 3-0 in the game's 17th minute - when Frontenacs goaltender Mike Morrison was pulled after making just eight saves - and, after the Colts scored a power-play goal with Kingston's Sam Bennett serving an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty, 4-0 before the first period was over.
It was 5-0 going into the third period, when Darcy Greenaway scored goals for Kingston just 20 seconds apart in the first two minutes of play but the Frontenacs, who finished seventh in the Eastern Conference, failed to draw inspiration from the outburst. Barrie turned the game into a rout with goals 43 seconds apart in the middle of the period and rubbed Kingston's nose in it with a goal with a minute to play.
Mitchell Theoret, who had just one assist in three games against Kingston in the regular year, had two goals and two assists for Barrie. He scored the game's first goal and his goal at 9:16 of the third period snuffed the Frontenacs' flagging comeback hopes.
It was his second two-goal game in a row, and he finished the series with five goals and eight points.
Andreas Athanasiou also scored twice for Barrie, his fourth and fifth goals of the series. Mark Scheifele assisted on his team's first two goals and scored the third. Erik Bradford, Aaron Ekblad and Cody Brown scored the other goals for Barrie, the conference's second-best team during the season.
Colts goaltender Mathias Niederberger made 35 saves, as each team took 37 shots on goal. Related Articles:
